Parce que le trio acoustique est une de ses premières influences, Julie Lamontagne nous présente son premier album sous cette formation avec Dave Watts à la contrebasse et Richard Irwin à la batterie. Dix compositions originales inspirées certainement par la tradition jazz mais aussi par un modernisme qui donnent à ce trio leur son bien à eux.

With the acoustic trio playing an important part as an early musical influence in her life, it's only natural that Julie Lamontagne would choose to present her debut album in trio formation, along with Dave Watts on double bass and Richard Irwin on drums. Ten original compositions inspired by jazz tradition, but with an added whiff of modernism that gives this trio a sound all their own.
Combining memories from journeys past, casual moments, monumental events, doubts and convictions, quiet reflection, pleasure, laughter, simplicity and wisdom, the music on this album will carry you away into an
intimate and unique world. Music lovers will delight in discovering this young and already very accomplished pianist.

JULIE LAMONTAGNE - PIANO
Julie Lamontagne est une pianiste, claviériste et compositrice qui possède déjà, pour son
jeune âge, un parcours étonnant. Elle joue du piano depuis l'âge de 8 ans et c'est en
explorant beaucoup de styles musicaux, de formations diverses et d'instruments qu'elle
a fait son chemin. Dotée d'une formation classique solide et récipiendaire de nombreuses
récompenses, dont un premier prix du Concours de musique du Canada à l'âge de 13 ans, elle
décide d'explorer d'autres styles musicaux. Elle a joué de la flûte, du saxophone et même
des percussions latines pendant de nombreuses années, mais elle a cependant décidé de
revenir à ses premières amours, le piano, et elle a plongé dans l'univers des musiques
jazz et populaire en juxtaposant les claviers et le piano acoustique.
Inspirée par les pianistes de jazz montréalais, ancienne élève de Lorraine Desmarais, d'André
White et de Jan Jarczyk, elle continue toujours de se perfectionner à New York grââce à une
bourse du Conseil des Arts du Canada avec Garry Dial, professeur à la Manhattan School of
Music, et également, avec l'excellent pianiste Fred Hersch, grâce à une bourse du Conseil
des arts et des lettres du Québec.
On a pu entendre Julie avec le big band de Denny Christianson, Tony Royster Jr, Guy Nadon,
Éval Manigat, Monica Freire et bien d'autres. Chef d'orchestre et claviériste attitrée de la
chanteuse Isabelle Boulay, Julie Lamontagne l'accompagne lors de ses tournées au Québec et
en Europe, ainsi qu'à de nombreuses émissions de télévision et de radio, en plus de participer
à l'enregistrement de ses albums. Elle est également la claviériste de plusieurs autres artistes,
dont Bruno Pelletier et Térez Montcalm, avec qui elle a également enregistré leurs derniers albums.
Elle a notamment collaboré à l'album de Nanette Workman Vanilla Blues Cafe comme musicienne et
arrangeure pour la pièce I lost my baby.
Également active au niveau de la composition, elle a écrit dernièrement la musique thème de
la chaîne de Radio-Canada Espace Musique, diffusée partout au pays. De concert avec le label
de jazz montréalais Effendi, Julie a décidé de constituer son premier album en trio Facing the
truth de ses compositions originales. C'est avec beaucoup d'enthousiasme qu'elle entreprend le
volet de sa carrière en musique jazz en parallèle au volet en musique populaire qui lui assure
déjà beaucoup de succès. Le volet jazz s'est d'ailleurs bien amorcé lorsqu'elle a remporté le
prix " Artiste de la relève " après une prestation au Off Festival de Jazz de Montréal 2003 avec son trio.
DAVE WATTS - CONTREBASSE
Dave Watts est détenteur d'un baccalauréat en interprétation jazz de l'Université McGill.
Il enseigne actuellement la contrebasse au Collège Vanier. Il a joué avec plusieurs des
meilleurs musiciens de jazz du Canada, dont Jeff Johnston, Greg Amireault, Joel Miller,
Bernard Primeau, Hugh Fraser et PJ Perry, et a fait des tournées au Canada, en France,
au Mexique et en Asie. On peut l'entendre sur plus de 11 albums accompagner des artistes
tels que Dorothée Berryman, Bernard Primeau, George Evans et Donny Kennedy. Il a récemment
complété un projet d'études à New York avec Rufus Reid et Johanness Weidenmuller grâce
à une subvention du Conseil des Arts du Canada.
RICHARD IRWIN - BATTERIE
Richard Irwin a décidé de venir habiter à Montréal pour étudier le jazz à
l'Université McGill et depuis, il travaille activement au sein de plusieurs ensembles,
tels que le Montreal Jazz Big Band, Vic Vogel's Le Jazz Big Band, Matt Herskowitz, ainsi
qu'avec d'autres artistes locaux. À l'édition 2001 du Festival International de Jazz de
Montréal, il a joué avec Vic Vogel et le trompettiste invité Freddie Hubbard. Plus récemment,
il a joué à la conférence de l'International Association of Jazz Educators, à Toronto,
partageant la scène avec des artistes tels que Jane Bunnett, Hugh Fraser et Rob McConnell.
En 2003, il a participé au spectacle Simplement Marnay, accompagnant plusieurs vedettes,
dont la chanteuse Céline Dion. Depuis cinq ans, il se produit régulièrement en tournée en
Amérique du Nord avec le groupe rock celtique Hadrian's Wall. Aux Francofolies de Montréal
2004, en compagnie du Vic Vogel Big Band, il était de la réunion avec le groupe légendaire
Offenbach En fusion. Il a également participé à l'enregistrement du récent album de Johanne
Blouin Until I Met you, en compagnie du Vic Vogel Big Band. Il étudie présentement à New York
avec Cindy Blackman, grâce à une bourse du Conseil des Arts du Canada.
JULIE LAMONTAGNE - PIANO
Despite her young age, pianist, keyboardist and composer Julie Lamontagne has already traced a successful and fascinating career path. She began playing the piano at the age of eight, and was soon exploring many different types of music and a wide variety of formations and instruments. Possessing a solid classical background, and winner of numerous awards (including a First Prize at the prestigious Canadian Music Competition at the age of thirteen), she decided early on to explore other musical styles. After playing flute, saxophone and even Latin percussions for several years, she decided to return to her first love, the piano, immersing herself into the worlds of jazz and pop music, alternating between keyboards and acoustic piano.
Inspired by the great Montreal jazz pianists, Julie is a former student of Lorraine Desmarais, André White and Jan Jarczyk. She continues to hone her considerable talents at New York's Manhattan School of Music with Garry Dial thanks to a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. She has also received funding from the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec to study with the excellent pianist Fred Hersch.
Julie has appeared with Denny Christianson's Big Band, Tony Royster Jr., Guy Nadon, Éval Manigat, Monica Freire and many others. As bandleader and keyboardist for Isabelle Boulay, Julie Lamontagne regularly accompanies the singer on tour in Quebec and Europe, as well as on numerous television and radio programs, and is featured on her albums. She also plays keyboards for a number of other artists including Bruno Pelletier and Térez Montcalm, and can be heard on their most recent albums. She participated in Nanette Workman's latest album Vanilla Blues Café, as both musician and arranger on the piece Lost my Baby.
Also active as a composer, she recently wrote the theme music for Radio-Canada's Espace Musique network, broadcast across the country. In collaboration with the Montreal jazz label Effendi, Julie decided that her first trio album Facing the truth would consist entirely of her own original compositions. She embarks upon her new jazz career with great relish, pursuing it side by side with her already very successful career in pop music. The jazz part certainly got off to an excellent start when she received the award for Best New Artist following a performance with her trio at the 2003 OFF Festival de Jazz de Montréal.
DAVE WATTS - DOUBLE BASS
Dave Watts holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance from McGill University and teaches double bass at Vanier College. He has played with several of Canada's best jazz musicians, including Jeff Johnston, Greg Amirault, Joel Miller, Bernard Primeau, Hugh Fraser and PJ Perry, and has toured Canada, France, Mexico and Asia. He has recorded over a dozen albums, accompanying artists such as Dorothée Berryman, Bernard Primeau, George Evans and Donny Kennedy. He recently completed a study program in New York with Rufus Reid and Johannes Weidenmuller, thanks to a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.
RICHARD IRWIN - DRUMS
Richard Irwin moved to Montreal to study jazz at McGill University and has since been an active member of several groups, including the Montréal Jazz Big Band, Vic Vogel's Le Jazz Big Band and Matt Herskowitz' ensemble, as well as performing with many other local artists. At the 2001 Montreal International Jazz Festival, he played with Vic Vogel and guest trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. He recently performed at the International Association of Jazz Educators' annual conference in Toronto, sharing the stage with artists such as Jane Bunnett, Hugh Fraser and Rob McConnell. In 2003, he was part of the show Simplement Marnay, accompanying several stars including Céline Dion. During the past five years he has been appearing regularly on tour with the Celtic rock group Hadrian's Wall. As a member of Vic Vogel's Big Band at the 2004 Francofolies de Montréal, he took part in the legendary Offenbach En fusion reunion. He is also featured on Johanne Blouin's recent album Until I Met You, with Vic Vogel's Big Band. He is presently pursuing studies in New York with Cindy Blackman, thanks to a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.
